What is calcium gluconate used for?
Calcium gluconate is a medication used to manage hypocalcemia, cardiac arrest, and cardiotoxicity due to hyperkalemia or hypermagnesemia. It is classified as a calcium salt.
What is it used for in emergency?
It is most commonly used in emergency situations to treat several conditions. It is not well-suited to return low blood calcium levels to normal. Instead, cal gluc is used to mitigate the signs and symptoms of low calcium levels or high potassium levels.
When should cal gluc be administered?
Severe symptomatic hypocalcemia (seizure, laryngospasm, tetany): 1 to 2 grams of calcium gluconate should be administered in 10 minutes and repeated in 10 to 60 minutes until symptoms resolve. How is calcium gluconate administered?
It should be administered intravenously either directly or by infusion. The dose is dependent upon the individual requirements of the patient. Cal gluc may also be administered by intermittent infusion at a rate not exceeding 200 mg/min, or by continuous infusion.
Why would you give calcium gluconate?
It is used to treat conditions arising from calcium deficiencies such as hypocalcemic tetany, hypocalcemia related to hypoparathyrodism and hypocalcemia due to rapid growth or pregnancy.
What is the effect of cal gluc?
Rapid injection of cal gluc may cause vasodilation decreased blood pressure, bradycardia, cardiac arrhythmias, syncope and cardiac arrest.
